A hair transplant shouldn’t put your life on hold. Here’s exactly what to expect — how it feels, how you’ll look, and how fast you get back to everything.
Most patients are surprised by how little a hair transplant hurts. During the procedure, discomfort comes in just two short periods of about five minutes each, and most patients rate it around a 4 out of 10. Afterward, any soreness fades fast — 95% of our patients are off all pain medication by noon the next day. You’ll leave tired but elated, not wrecked.
You’ll wear a bandage for the first day or two. From then through about day 10, you’ll have small scabs where the grafts were placed and a short haircut along the donor sides — unless you choose a Discreet procedure, which needs no haircut at all. Fewer than 1 in 5 patients get mild, temporary swelling around the forehead or eyes. None of it lasts, and a cap covers most of it if you’d rather keep things private.

Insurance is unlikely to cover a hair transplant, as it’s considered a cosmetic procedure. There are a few instances — such as hair loss following an injury or for gender affirmation — where insurance may provide coverage. In these cases, Northwestern Hair provides you with documentation that you had a procedure, along with your invoice, for you to submit to insurance. It’s important to understand that Northwestern Hair does not have the staffing to help you submit this paperwork for coverage.
