Northwestern Hair Restoration is a physician-owned hair loss and hair restoration practice known for its multiple innovations that push the field forward. Our Deerfield clinic brings that practice to Lake County. Dr. Vinay Rawlani sees patients here, offering the full Northwestern Hair service line: hair transplantation consultation, ACS non-surgical treatment, and medical hair loss management. The clinic operates inside HairLab Chicago, the trichology and hair systems practice Debbie Ansay-Martinez and Chanel Kwak have run in Deerfield for over twenty years.

Most hair restoration cases involve more than one kind of work. Some patients pursue medical management for years before surgery enters the conversation. Others go directly to ACS non-surgical treatment and never need a transplant. Others combine all three. The Deerfield clinic is where Dr. Vinay evaluates the case and where most of the work happens, including consultation, ACS, medical regimen, planning, and follow-up.
Services below are organized by men’s and women’s care; the clinical components are similar across both, but the consultation approach is customized to each patient’s individual needs.
The pattern most men present with is one of three: a receding hairline, a thinning crown, or both. The Deerfield consultation evaluates hair health, the trajectory of loss across the next decade, and age, then recommends the treatment that fits the case. Hair transplantation does what only surgery can do. Non-surgical restoration with ACS can manage cases where regenerative care is the right answer before, or instead of, surgery. Medical management addresses loss before it advances.
Hair transplantation physically moves hair from one part of the scalp to another. Northwestern Hair is known for its advanced techniques, including Micro PUE — a refinement of standard FUE designed to produce healthier grafts and more natural results that age well across decades. The Deerfield consultation evaluates what’s possible in a specific case: donor capacity, hairline architecture, graft count projections, and how the loss is likely to progress over the next decade. Dr. Vinay designs every hairline himself, on the patient, in person.
Autologous Cellular Serum (ACS) is a non-surgical treatment Dr. Vinay developed to stand alongside transplantation rather than under it. For men who aren’t ready for surgery, who want to delay it, or whose cases respond well to regenerative work, ACS is the treatment that gives patients room to plan without committing to a procedure before they’re certain about it.
The earlier a man comes in, the more medical management can shape the outcome. A real regimen draws on FDA-approved medications, prescription protocols, the right over-the-counter agents matched to the case, and nutritional adjustment. The discipline is in the follow-up: the structured monitoring that separates ongoing medical management from a prescription handed across a counter.
For men who arrive early, medical management often does most of the work. For men whose loss has progressed further, it stabilizes the case so whatever else follows runs from a stronger position.
Most women arriving for a hair loss evaluation have been quietly tracking the situation for a long time. Often what they bring to it is a stack of competing explanations: hormonal, postpartum, stress, “just genetic,” sometimes all of them from different clinicians who never compared notes. The work of a serious consultation is to look at the whole picture rather than picking one explanation and running with it.
That’s the consultation we offer at Deerfield. A woman’s hair restoration plan typically unfolds across years and almost always combines more than one kind of work — surgical candidacy, non-surgical care through ACS, medical management, and, for cases where the workup calls for it, the functional medicine evaluation available through our Clarendon Hills clinic.
A hair transplant is a real option for women, and the criteria that determine candidacy look different from men’s. The right candidate has stable donor density, a clear pattern of loss, and goals that match what surgical work can credibly deliver. Surgery suits a specific subset of women’s cases — localized thinning along the part line, defined recipient zones, or hairline restoration in cases where the donor area supports it. The consultation moves through donor evaluation, hairline design, graft count projection, and pricing the same way it does for men, but candidacy assessment is more conservative because female pattern hair loss often calls for medical and regenerative work alongside surgery, or in place of it. Many women feel more confident moving forward once candidacy and likely outcomes are clearly defined.
The honest version of the consultation is that for many women, the answer is not surgery — at least not yet. For the women who are candidates, Dr. Vinay designs and performs the procedure at our main Chicago location, applying the same hairline architecture and aesthetic judgment that defines every Northwestern Hair transplant.
Some of Northwestern Hair’s strongest outcomes in female patients have come through ACS. Patients experiencing diffuse thinning, early-to-moderate female pattern hair loss, the cases where the thinning has begun but transplantation is premature. The non-surgical protocol works on follicles that are still alive but functioning below capacity, and in the right cases, the treatment produces restoration substantial enough to delay surgery for years or remove it from the plan entirely. In the right case, this can support natural growth without moving immediately to surgery.
Early intervention is where medical care does most of its work for women. The first months after delivery, the opening stretch of perimenopause, female pattern hair loss before significant density has been lost, these are the moments when a regimen has the most to give the case.
Dr. Vinay manages the medical regimen directly and adjusts based on response across the months that real treatment takes.
Every consultation at Northwestern Hair is performed by Dr. Vinay. So is every procedure, every hairline design, and every long-term follow-up. He trained in plastic surgery at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago and is board-certified in both plastic surgery and hair restoration.
“I’ve sat on both sides of this chair. I’ve had the procedures we perform. I know what they feel like, what recovery actually looks like, and what makes a result hold up over a lifetime instead of a few good years.”
Hair restoration is a medical procedure, but the difference between a good result and a great one is artistry as much as science. Hairline design isn’t a template. It’s a study of proportion, angle, and the way hair will age across the next forty years. The progression of the science, continually challenging the techniques we use, is what lets us deliver what our eyes want to see as our perfect selves. At Northwestern Hair, science meets the expectations of art.
The principle this practice was built on is that the best work in hair restoration happens when specialists with aligned goals and different vantage points share the same patients. A trichologist evaluating a scalp arrives at a different framing than a physician evaluating the same scalp. The conversation that follows produces a treatment plan stronger than either specialist would have built alone. Northwestern Hair was designed to host that conversation, not replace it.
A physician-owned hair loss and hair restoration clinic founded by Dr. Vinay Rawlani, a board-certified physician trained in plastic surgery and hair restoration. At our Deerfield clinic, Northwestern Hair offers FUE and Micro PUE hair transplant consultation, ACS non-surgical hair restoration, and medical hair loss treatment, with Dr. Vinay personally on site on his rotation days.
The practice Debbie Ansay-Martinez and Chanel Kwak built over more than twenty years in Deerfield. Their work pairs holistic trichology with the CRLAB CNC Hair System, and the practice has built its reputation around hair loss conditions that conventional clinics often miss.
Our Deerfield clinic is where this conviction is most visible. Two practices, anchored at the same Lake Cook Road address: Northwestern Hair Restoration and HairLab Chicago. The collaboration brings surgical and medical hair restoration into the same building as trichology and the CRLAB CNC Hair System, so patients across Lake County and the North Shore access the full range of restoration in minutes rather than driving downtown.
Northwestern Hair is built on a conviction: hair restoration works best when it runs alongside the disciplines it can’t cover on its own.
At Deerfield, those disciplines are trichology and hair replacement, the clinical study of scalp and hair strand conditions, and the craft of delivering coverage when restoration can’t recover enough hair.
The clinic is hosted by HairLab Chicago, where Debbie Ansay-Martinez practices trichology and Chanel Kwak runs CRLAB CNC Hair System work. The same model defines our other satellite clinics: each is hosted by a specialist whose craft addresses a different dimension of hair loss.
Collaborators move between our clinics as patient plans call for it, so a Deerfield consultation also opens access to the pigmentation and medical-workup specialists at our other locations.
Dr. Vinay’s focus is the medical, surgical, and regenerative treatments that improve hair health, support growth, and prevent further loss. Debbie’s trichology evaluation addresses the scalp and hair strand conditions, such as nutritional contributors, follicular environment, hygiene patterns, and root causes affecting the follicular environment, that determine whether hair can grow well in the first place.
Where restoration can’t recover enough hair to deliver the density a patient is looking for, Chanel’s CRLAB CNC Hair System work picks up. For non-surgical patients, the trichology and CNC work runs alongside the home regimens Dr. Vinay manages. Both sides of the practice deliver more for the patient through the collaboration than either could deliver alone.
Board Certified Trichologist
At HairLab Chicago, Debbie leads the trichology consultation, the clinical study of the hair and scalp that surfaces the underlying drivers of hair thinning a surface examination won’t catch. For women whose hair loss has been going for years without a clear explanation, the trichology evaluation is often the foundation the rest of the plan is built on.
CRLAB CNC Systems Expert
Chanel anchors the CRLAB CNC Hair System work at the Deerfield clinic. The CRLAB CNC uses advanced technology to create a custom-fit prosthetic built individually for each patient from a 3D scan of the scalp, with virgin hair selected to match the patient’s existing color, texture, density, and curl pattern… Unlike surgical transplantation, which typically takes 6 to 12 months to mature, this system provides immediate density.

About our Deerfield Hair Restoration Clinic
No. The FUE hair transplant procedure is performed only at Northwestern Hair Restoration’s flagship in Chicago, where the surgical environment and trained surgical team are. Consultation, planning, ACS non-surgical hair restoration, medical hair loss treatment, trichology, hair systems, and post-procedural follow-up all happen in Deerfield. The surgical day is the single trip downtown.
A detailed medical history, scalp examination, hair pull test, trichoscopy under magnification, and blood work when it’s indicated. We’re working to identify the underlying cause, not just the surface symptoms. The treatment plan follows the diagnosis, not the other way around.
Insurance does not typically cover hair transplantation or most hair restoration treatments, as hair loss is generally considered a cosmetic condition. We provide invoicing so patients can submit to their insurance directly when applicable. Treatments are HSA- and FSA-eligible where the patient’s plan allows.
Yes. Virtual consultations are available for both men and women. For surgical evaluation, an in-person visit to the Deerfield clinic is preferred.
